On December 1st each year (yes, it is just 24 days before Christmas) we will leave the packaging from the products we buy with a store's manager and politely ask him/her to let the manufacturers know that something needs to be done about excessive packaging.

Overpackaging.com
Overpackaging.com is a great site I found when I was doing some research. You send them photos of overpackaged items and they contact the manufacturer for you to ask for it to be reduced. Based out of the UK.
