Global Unpackage Day - The Idea

On December 1st each year (yes, it is just 24 days before Christmas) we will leave the packaging from the products we buy with a store's manager and politely ask him/her to let the manufacturers know that something needs to be done about excessive packaging.

Examples include: fruit individually packed in plastic containers, USB Flash RAM sticks, individually wrapped cookies inside cookie tins etc.

OUR GOAL: to find retailers who will help us pilot test a scheme in which customers can RETURN the packaging to the retail outlet they bought the product from for store points or cash. The points or cash would be based on the weight of the packaging returned.

BENEFITS:

FOR THE RETAILER:
1) customer loyalty: if a customer has to return packaging they are more likely to shop at the store again. Heck, they are in the store they may as well shop.

2) retailers could act as representatives for consumers by helping their manufacturer or wholesale clients reduce excessive packaging.

FOR THE CUSTOMER:
1) Less packaging to throw out and therefore less trash/rubbish/garbage for the municipality to pick up leading to lower taxes

HOW YOU CAN HELP US:
On December 1st buy items from retail outlet, remove the packaging, ask to see the manager, video yourself (30 to 60 seconds max) or take a picture of you returning the packaging, upload or send us the picture.

We all win.
